Japan to Host Make Your Own Satellite Contest

WASHINGTON -- Got a cool idea for a satellite? Japan wants you. The National Space Development Agency of Japan will be conducting a nationwide contest for new ideas in remote sensing satellites, the space agency announced today.

The contest is co-sponsored by the Remote Sensing Technology Center of Japan and will be timed for the Earth Observation Fair to be held Sept. 14 and 15 in Tokyo.

Entries can be submitted between now and Aug. 31. The winners will be announced at the fair Sept. 15. First place winner will receive a series of satellite images of the Japanese island. Runners up will receive flown space mementos of Japanese astronauts.

The public is invited to submit new ideas for what NASDA called "imaginary satellites with which to view the Earth." The space agency said it hoped that the general public would become more interested in the fair and in Earth observing satellites and technology.

Competition Outline from NASDA (Source: NASDA)

Background to the competition: Earth observation satellites keep a close watch over our planet from space and provide us with large amounts of information.

What kinds of things do we want to learn from these earth observation satellites? Specifically, by learning what kinds of things would the future become more enjoyable for us? Based on this dream, we are inviting you to make free use of your imagination and come up with an idea for an observation satellite.

* Please note that none of the competition entries will actually be developed into real satellites.
