Space pioneer John Glenn, who returned to orbit last fall aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery, was on hand Thursday to celebrate the opening of the new COSI science learning center in Columbus, Ohio.

The $125-million facility, which will open officially on Saturday, was developed under the leadership of former shuttle astronaut Kathy Sullivan, the first American woman to walk in space.

During his remarks Thursday evening, Glenn noted that on her three shuttle missions, Sullivan had racked up more hours in space than he.

"I've only made two flights," said Glenn. Then, pausing for effect, he added, "So far."

Among the attractions at the new COSI is a simulated space mission to land on a comet. Wide-screen visual effects are presented in a theater that is mounted on hydraulic pistons, making visitors feel as well as see the wild ride.
