Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak is pressing the United States to bring an Israeli astronaut aboard the space shuttle. He has asked U.S. officials to announce the date for such a mission, the Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported on Sunday.

The idea of sending an Israeli into space, first raised by then Prime Minister Shimon Peres in 1995, was subsequently delayed, apparently due to tensions between U.S. officials and the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Barak defeated Netanyahu in May 1999 elections and took office in early July.

Two Israeli Air Force officers, Colonel Ilan Ramon and Lieutenant Colonel Yitzhak Mayo, have trained at an astronaut training base in Houston, Texas.
