WASHINGTON (States News Service) -- Over 1,500 acres at NASA's AMES Research Center will be returned to Stanislaus County in California if a bill that passed the House Space subcommittee Thursday becomes law.

The House bill, H.R. 356, transfers the Crowes Landing facility back to the county, who wants to develop it into an air-cargo depot, Congressional sources said.

The Ames center's only comment was that administrators supported the conveyance. Sources in Congress said that NASA does not regularly use the facility, which used to belong to the Navy, and that the only difficulty has been sorting out the environmental responsibilities. No money will change hands between the space agency and the county in the deal.

The bill must now head to the science committee for full approval.
