Sitting atop a Soyuz rocket, the Russian-built Progress 14 cargo module successfully rose skyward from its launchpad at Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan during an on-time liftoff at 8:34 a.m. EDT (1234 GMT) May 25. The spacecraft slipped into Earth orbit shedding its spent rocket stages along the way and is now making the two-day trip to deliver 3,000 pounds (1,360 kilograms) of supplies to Expedition 9 commander Gennady Padalka and astronaut Michael Fincke, NASA science officer and flight engineer, aboard the ISS. Progress 14 is the first supply ship for the Expedition 9 crew and will dock Thursday May 27 at the space station's Russian Zvezda module. The docking slot was previously occupied by the Progress 13 cargo module, which Padalka and Fincke loaded with trash earlier this week. That older supply ship undocked from the ISS in the early morning hours of May 24.
