WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Department of State spelled out the extent to which the U.S. government will assist Russia in bringing down the huge Mir space station.

In a March 2 statement, the U.S. government has agreed, within its capabilities, to provide Russia with tracking and trajectory data. It also will provide scientific data on atmospheric conditions, including solar activity, during the period of deorbit.

The Russian government, through its Russian Aviation and Space Agency (Rosaviacosmos), has also asked the European Space Agency to contribute tracking and trajectory data to support the safe deorbit of Mir.

"The Government of the Russian Federation has stated that it remains solely responsible for the deorbit of the Mir space station. The Russian Government has repeatedly stated its commitment to a controlled and safe deorbit period," the State Department release said.

Sharing tracking data

Such assets as the U.S. Space Commands worldwide surveillance network are to be tasked to help monitor Mir's whereabouts and its descent. "It will share its tracking and trajectory data with the Russian government to complement and expand Russias own data," the State Department release said.

The United States and Russia have also agreed to employ "existing lines of communications" between NASA and Rosaviacosmos to conduct routine data exchange during the deorbit period. Those existing lines of communication have been established to jointly operate the International Space Station.

Mir trackers contacted by SPACE.com now expect the giant space outpost to be brought down in an uninhabited area of the south Pacific Ocean on or near March 15.
