WASHINGTON Arianespace of Evry, France, has rescheduled the delayed flight of the Eurasiasat 1 telecommunications satellite to Jan. 8, according to a Jan. 3 Arianespace statement.

The launch originally was scheduled for mid December aboard an Ariane 4 rocket. The mission was delayed to permit the satellites builder, Alcatel Space of Paris, to conduct additional checks on the craft. The Jan. 8 launch window opens at 5:18 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (23:18 GMT) and closes 7:26 p.m. (Jan. 9, 00:26 GMT).

Eurasiasat 1 is equipped with 32 high-power Ku-band transponders for broadcasting over Europe, Turkey and central Asia, and steerable beams that can be directed to the Middle East, Russia, India and South Africa.

The satellite, also known as Turksat 2A, is owned by Eurasiasat of Monaco, a joint-venture company owned 75 percent by Turk Telekom and 25 percent by Alcatel Space.

The flight will be the first of the year at Europes Guiana Space Center in Kourou, French Guiana, and the 102nd launch of an Ariane 4 rocket.
