ISS Crew to Fix Solar Wing Joint Motor
Updated at 3:48 p.m. EST Thursday, January 24, 2008:

Astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) are preparing to stage the fifth spacewalk of their six-month mission and the arrival of an unmanned Russian cargo ship and a NASA space shuttle early next month.

ISS Expedition 16 commander Peggy Whitson and flight engineer Dan Tani are due to step outside the station at about 5:30 a.m. EST (1030 GMT) for more than six hours of repair work to replace a suspect solar array joint motor on the outpost's starboard side.

Whitson, Tani and flight engineer Yuri Malenchenko are also preparing the station for the planned Feb. 7 arrival of the unmanned Russian cargo ship Progress 28, which is due to dock at the ISS on the same day that NASA's shuttle Atlantis launches toward the orbital outpost on the STS-122 mission. STS-122 will deliver the European Space Agency's (ESA) Columbus laboratory to the station during a planned 11-day mission.

The Expedition 16 crew are currently packing an older Progress supply ship with trash and unneeded equipment to prepare for the arrival of Progress 27.

Tani is due to return to Earth with the STS-122 crew once Atlanits departs the ISS. His replacement, French astronaut Leopold Eyharts of the ESA, will stay aboard for about one month before another shuttle flight - STS-123 aboard Endeavour - arrives with his relief, NASA astronaut Garrett Reisman.

Whitson and Malenchenko, the core crewmembers of the Expedition 16 mission, are slated to return to Earth on April 19, 2008.
