Space Station Crew Returns to Earth
Updated at 10:00 a.m. EDT Saturday, April 19, 2008:

Astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) have wrapped up their six-month mission with a planned Saturday landing on the steppes of Kazakhstan.

ISS Expedition 16 commander Peggy Whitson, flight engineer Yuri Malenchenko and South Korean astroanut So-yeon Yi returned to Earth aboard their Soyuz TMA-11 spacecraft on April 19, but landed off target and in a backup ballistic mode.

Whitson and Malenchenko completed a busy mission packed with ISS construction. During their spaceflight, they have hosted three NASA space shuttle crews, added a connecting node, European lab, Japanese storage room and Canadian robot to the ISS. Three NASA astronauts and one French spaceflyer also participated in Expedition 16 as a third, rotating crew member.

Expedition 16 began in October 2007 and ended after about 192 days in orbit. Whitson set a new U.S. record for total time in space during the flight and her previous Expedition 5 mission, and landed with 377 days in orbit under her belt. Malenchenko, also a veteran long-duration astronaut, finished with 515 days, making him ninth on the all-time list of most flown astronauts.
