Chinese space authorities appear to have outlined a multi-phased space program:

  1. Piloted spaceflight trials
  2. Rendezvous and docking of spacecraft
  3. Build-up of a space station

The flight of Shenzhou 5 is clearly a first step in a lengthy effort to assure China's foothold in space in the 21st Century. One analyst cites China's desire to " play with the big boys ."
