Tropical
Storm Edouard moves west along the northern Gulf of Mexico on the morning of
August 4, as seen in an image taken by flight engineer Greg Chamitoff on the
International Space Station.
The
storm did not strengthen into a hurricane before hitting the Gulf Coast east of
Galveston, Texas on August 5, with oil rigs off the Louisiana coast reporting
sustained winds of 45 to 55 miles (72 to 89 kilometers) per hour. The
wind-speed threshold for a Category 1 hurricane stands at 74 miles (119 kilometers)
per hour.
Edouard's
strong winds and heavy rains caused little damage besides a brief electrical
outage. Off-shore production and refineries had begun returning to normal
operations shortly after the storm had passed.
