On top of
La Silla mountain in Chile, ESO's 3.6-m telescope and the attached dome of the Coude
Auxiliary Telescope (CAT) sit beneath a stunning Milky Way, on May 10, 2008.
The telescope itself is illuminated by the setting moon.
The 3.6-m
telescope contains the HARPS instrument, a highly successful exoplanet hunter.
It discovered the system of planets around Gliese 581, including the most
Earth-like planet found till now, Gliese 581c.
Capturing
this beautiful photo required a 30-second exposure.
