Space
Shuttle Discovery appears to hang motionless as it approaches Runway 15 at
Kennedy Space Center.
Discovery's
landing took place at 11:15 am on Saturday, June 14, marking the completion of
the STS-124 mission after 14 days and 5.7 million miles in space. The shuttle's
crew delivered the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's large Japanese
Pressurized Module (Kibo) and its remote manipulator system to the
International Space Station.
Visible on
the ground is the Ball-Bar Light System, which provides a visual reference to
provide inner glide slope information for the pilot on final approach. If the
orbiter is above the glide slope of 1.5 degrees, white lights will appear to be
below a bar of red lights. If the vehicle is below the glide slope, the white
lights will appear to be above the red lights.
