Cyclone Nargis
makes its way across the Bay
of Bengal just south
of Myanmar on May 1, 2008, as seen by the Envisat satellite.
Shortly thereafter, the cyclone
devastated the coastal region of Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, with
the death toll feared to be as high as 100,000. That would place Cyclone Nargis
in the top three or four deadliest cyclones of modern times. Cyclones are
typically categorized
as hurricanes or typhoons depending on their location, with typhoons such
as Nargis originating in the northwestern Pacific.
Earth
Observation (EO) satellites have increasingly been used for flood response and
mitigation, providing an overhead view of the flood situation on the ground.
