The
Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) selected this spectacular picture of galaxies
in the Virgo cluster for their September 2007 Astronomy Image Of The Month.
The
Virgo
cluster, the nearest large cluster to us, is estimated to lie approximately
50 million light years away, in our Local Supercluster. It may comprise as many as
2000 galaxies. So massive is the Virgo cluster that it attracts our galaxy and
other galaxies.
The
data was obtained using the MegaCam camera on the CFHT.
This
image was made by Jean-Charles Cuillandre (CFHT) & Giovanni Anselmi (Coelum).
