Three
telescopes watch silently as Comet
McNaught cuts a swath across the night sky over Chile’s Paranal
Observatory.
McNaught’s head
shines as the bright orb at the left of this view, which is dominated on the
right by one of the European Southern Observatory’s (ESO) Very Large Telescope units.
Two additional Auxiliary Telescops cast dome-like shadows as McNaught sets
behind the horizon of the Pacific Ocean.
Comet McNaught kicked off 2007 with a
stellar astronomical show, and has already been billed as the Great
Comet of 2007.
