The galaxy
M82 fills the night sky in this image taken by a pair of skywatchers at Arizona’s Kitt Peak Observatory.
Amateur
astronomers Matt Anderson and Julie Hammonds took this image of M82, also known
as the Cigar Galaxy, last month as part of nightly observing program at Kitt Peak.
Sitting
about 11.7 million light-years from Earth towards the
constellation Ursa Major. The reddish material streaming out from the galaxies
center is vast cloud of dust particles blown outward by the wind of newborn
stars.
