The Earth
appears in a reddish hue in this color debut by Europe's MSG-2 satellite.
Taken on
Jan. 25, 2006, this view of our home planet is among the first recorded by the
European Meteosat Second Generation 2 (MSG-2) satellite launched
last month. While an earlier image showed an Earth swathed in uneventful black
and white, this view gives the planet a rather warm, red glow.
The second
in a series of European satellites, MSG-2 is part of a cooperative effort by
the European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Organization
for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT). The probe’s
predecessor MSG-1,
now Meteosat 8, launched
on Aug. 28, 2002.
MSG-2 launched spaceward atop an Arianespace Ariane 5GS
rocket on Dec. 21, 2005.
