An
astronaut captures the flooding in New Orleans caused by Hurricane Katrina in
this orbital image.
The extent
of the flooding on the greater New Orleans metropolitan area can be easily seen
in this photograph, which was taken by a member of the Expedition 11 crew from
the International Space Station (ISS) orbiting more than 200 miles above Earth.
Flooded
areas appear dark greenish brown, while the dry regions to the west of the 17th
Street Canal and along the Mississippi River banks (lower half of the image)
appear light brown and gray. In the middle left, a freeway interchange can be
seen partially submerged, while the border between flooded and unflooded
regions is clearly visible.
This image
was taken on Sept. 8, but released on Sept. 15. It has been cropped and
oriented with north at the top.
