Sand dunes take on all sorts of interesting forms on Mars
Sand dunes take on all sorts of interesting forms on Mars. This view from the Mars Global Surveyor orbiter's Mars Orbiter Camera shows dark sand dunes on the floor of a crater in a region called Noachis Terra.
Dunes on Mars, as on Earth, often form strange, repeating patterns. Another picture shows strange dunes that resemble the Pacman game character.
This picture, released last week, was acquired in early southern autumn (March 2004 Earth-time). It is located near 52.4°S, 336.9°W. The image covers an area about 1.9 miles (3 km) across. Sunlight illuminates the scene from the upper left.
