Typhoon Nida killed at least 20 people in the Philippines in recent days and
as of late yesterday was racing toward Japan.
This true-color view of the storm was captured by NASA’s Aqua satellite. Nida was packing sustained winds of 100 mph (160 kph) with higher gusts.
It caused floods and landslides in the Bicol region of the main island of Luzo.
Nida displaced thousands of people as it skirted the eastern part of the country
before moving toward southern Japan.
Typhoons, like hurricanes, are areas of intense low pressure. The massive storms are called typhoons when they're in the Pacific Ocean north of the Equator and west of the International Dateline.
