Sometimes the most mundane things take on interest in the context of their
surroundings.
This image, acquired by the panoramic camera on the Mars Exploration Rover
Opportunity, shows the vast plains of Meridiani Planum, where for miles things
look pretty much the same. Except for this crack in the middle of the scene.
NASA's rover science team is looking into the sinuous crack, which consists
of a series of deep dimples sprinkled with rocks that resemble, from a distance,
those in the Eagle Crater outcrop where the rover landed.
On sol 70, Opportunity's 70th Mars day, the rover drove about 100
meters (328 feet) northeast to a target area along the crack dubbed Anatolia.
In the coming sols, the rover will study the crack in greater detail.
