CAPE CANAVERAL
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- Emergency crew members
lower a volunteer “astronaut” from the top of a full-sized shuttle crew
compartment mock-up during a recent emergency landing simulation at the Kennedy
Space Center.
The annual exercise -- held Feb. 18 -- simulates
what is known as a "Mode VII" emergency.
The purpose of the activity is to exercise
emergency preparedness personnel, equipment and facilities in rescuing
astronauts from a downed orbiter and providing immediate medical attention.
In this simulation an orbiter had crashed short
of the Shuttle Landing Facility in a wooded area two-and-a-half miles south of
Runway 33.
