CAPE CANAVERAL
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- America's most powerful
unmanned rocket, the Titan 4, lifts off from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station's
launch pad 40 at 1:50 p.m. EST on Feb. 14 -- a Valentine's Day treat for
everyone on Florida's Space Coast.
It's a sight that won't be repeated too many
times. In fact, there are only two more Titan 4 rockets scheduled for blast off
before the design is retired forever and the Air Force will rely completely on
its stable of Atlas 5 and Delta 4 Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicles.
The last Titan 4 from the Cape is targeted for
launch this Fall, while the final Titan 4 from Vandenberg Air Force Base in
California is expected early in 2005.
Saturday's launch, dramatically captured in this
image from a remote camera set up by Lockheed Martin's Pat Corkery, successfully
carried a $250 million Defense Support Program missile warning satellite into
geosynchronous orbit.
