Yesterday's Image of the Day was a view
of Earth and the Moon taken from the International Space Station (ISS).
Today, grounded photographer Petteri Kankaro gives us a wonderful look at the
ISS, the Moon and Mars.
In a long exposure, Kankaro captured the glimmering station, which reflects
sunlight, streaking through the sky above Turku, Finland.
The sea in the picture is called Airisto, and the building is called Airistontähti,
which means "star of the Airisto," Kankaro explained via e-mail. The picture
was taken on July 17 when the Moon was just past full and Mars was growing bright
in our sky.
The Moon is just past full again, and to help you explore it you can check
out our Skywatcher's
Guide to the Moon. And this month's sky, as any regular SPACE.com
reader probably knows, is dominated by Mars'
closest approach to Earth in human history.
What about the ISS? It's a tougher target, but anyone
can spot it: You just have to know when
and where to look.
