Untitled
This mosaic image
of the Sun was produced by Don Signori from Toronto. He captured the images on
June 11, during a time when sunspot activity was relatively strong.
"One spot in particular
(# 375) grew to over 10 Earth diameters," Signori said via e-mail when
he sent
the picture to SPACE.com. He included a small image of Earth in the bottom
left corner of spot # 375 for a rough comparison of the size.
Sunspots are an indicator
of overall solar activity, and they are often the wells of strong magnetic storms
that hurl charged particles into space, creating space
weather that can affect Earth enough to generate pretty auroral
displays or even disrupt communications. [Sun
