The
Andromeda galaxy at upper right and its satellite galaxy Messier 110 shine in this image by
the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope on Mauna Kea, Hawaii.
Andromeda
is the largest neighboring galaxy adjacent to the Milky Way at just 2.9 million light
years distant (A light-year is the distance light will travel in a year, about 6 trillion miles or 10 trillion kilometers). Observers can spot the 300-billion
star galaxy's bright core with the naked eye.
Messier
110 is a bright dwarf elliptical galaxy near Andromeda. Its diameter of 15,000
light-years across makes it comparable to the satellite galaxies of the Milky
Way, the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds.
