The
European Columbus laboratory is moved into position for installation using the International
Space Station's (ISS) robotic arm, Canadarm2.
NASA's space
shuttle Atlantis carried the $1.3
billion science lab to ISS last week after a two-month launch delay. Two
Atlantis astronauts spent
eight hours installing the new space lab onto the starboard port of the
station's Harmony module on Feb. 11, 2008,
supported by the combined astronaut crews of Atlantis and ISS. Columbus represents the European Space
Agency's first permanent module on ISS, complementing U.S. and Russian modules.
Following a Valentine's
Day breather, the astronauts continued their busy schedule with another spacewalk to
repair a broken gyroscope outside ISS.
