ARTIST: The Carpenters
TRACK: Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft
Not only is The Carpenter's rendition of this song the "recognized anthem of World Contact Day", but it has to be the worst song ever written about extraterrestrial life, far exceeding Neil Diamond's ode to E.T., “Heartlight”, in terms of sugary excess and mind-numbing banality.

What’s puzzling is that no one forced The Carpenters to record it. No, they did so willingly. Written by Klaatu, a mid-70s Canadian art-rock band with Pink Floyd-like pretensions, Richard Carpenter said that after hearing the song, he and his sister, Karen, "couldn't resist recording it. (Lyrics such as these don't come along every day!)" That's no excuse.
