What does it sound like when a relationship falls apart and you cast about looking for someone to blame? “Blame it on the black star/ Blame it on the falling sky/ Blame it on the satellite that beams me home …” That’s what Radiohead’s Thom Yorke does. With an elegant, uplifting guitar riff linking verses about disintegration and disappointment, “Black Star” is one of many standout tracks on the band’s second album, The Bends. By the time of its release, it was clear Radiohead had little interest in the Brit Pop feuding of fellow rockers Oasis and Blur. There was a much bigger universe to conquer.
