For many listeners, Don McLean’s ode to Vincent Van Gogh is either a touching tribute to a tortured genius or a maudlin attempt by the composer to equate his own anxieties with those of a far superior talent: “Starry, starry night/ Paint your palette blue and grey/ Look out on a summer's day/ With eyes that know the darkness in my soul ....” Pop crooner de jour Josh Groban’s recent live version does the near-impossible: it’s even more cloying. Stick with the original, it’s a guilty pleasure.
