In 1969 when Creedence released its third album, Green River, the Summer of Love was long over, the Tet Offensive had redefined US involvement in Vietnam and while Woodstock would seem to be the crescendo of all that was optimistic in popular culture, Altamont would eventually wipe all that away. Yes, "Bad Moon Rising" might not have been prophetic -- its lyrics are too vague -- but it still sounds like a warning, a siren's wail saying the good times couldn't last.
By the time of its release, Creedence was a hit-making machine: three albums in less than two years, seven Top 10 singles (though they never had a #1 song in the US), they even played Woodstock. More than a decade later, the song reentered the pop-cultural firmament thanks to its canny use in the comic-horror flick "An American Werewolf in London".
