When are we going get hydrogen cars ?

Postby nec208 » Fri Nov 06, 2009 6:51 pm

I know the main problem is making the tank small enough to fit in a car and make it safe .But do you think in th next 5 or 10 years they will make it safe and small enough to fit in a car?

I know hybrid cars are out and are good for city driving but not good for driving on a highway .The battery is use in the city and the gas is used on the highway . But hybrid cars are fake has you have to use the gas to charge the battery .So you still have to go to a gas station and it will run on battery in the city but on the highway you need the gas has the battery is not powerful enough.

Here are some new hybrid cars .But the problem is they are not powerful enough on the highway and you need to charge the battery .So they are only good for city driving.

Now electric cars are okay but 4 problems.

1. They are not powerful enough on the highway
2 .Where do you take it to plug it in to charge ?
3 How long does it take to charge
4 How long will it run with out needing to be charge again.

Going to a gas station takes 2 minutes but I do not think it will take 2 minutes to charge .

There may never be hydrogen powered cars in mass production, unless something happens to the
gasoline infrastructure. It is not just the cars, but the fuel distribution network that is equally important.

You just cannot throw away all the gas stations and gas cars without something to replace it.

I'd say if it ever happens, it will be a fuel cell powering electric motors, rather than a hydrogen IC engine.

The main problem is not the tank at all. Its producing Hydrogen in a sufficient quantity, all the while be cost effective compared to petroleum.
I don't think I'm alone when I say, "I hope more planets fall under the ruthless domination of Earth!"

What do you mean by producing Hydrogen in a sufficient quantity ?

I tried posting a picture of the zeppelin Hindenburg but lately a lot of us have had problems posting photos. The Hindenburg, full of hydrogen, blew up spectacularly!!! Do we really want to be inside a hydrogen powered vehicle? If you think that car crashes are deadly today wait until the first head-on against a hydrogen vehicle!

Just make the hydrogen in the vehicle as you travel. That way you only make what you need and none in excess to have any problems with. ;)

I guess you think that a regular gas tank filled with liquid gasoline of 15 or more gallons isn't just as bad or even worse? Seems hydrogen burns very fast , that within a few minutes all of its vapors are gone and the fire is out. Unlike gasoline which burns on and on and on it would seem. Gasoline is as powerful as a stick of dynamite for every gallon!

You can't make enough H2 "as you travel". That's the whole point. You need storage.

But hydrogen goes kablooie, sending shrapnels in all directions.
I don't remember the last time a car actually blew up. If they catch fire, it's usually just a fireball, which is spectacular, but rather harmless for the surrounding area.

Hydrogen is even less efficient than solar powered cars with current technology. To mass produce these, you must also consider the fuel supply. You would have to have like 5 to 10 times more fuel stations than now. If we had to mass produce some cars, I'd go for nuclear powered ones, or solar. More efficient, and better.

Here's a hydrogen generating system that could be used in conjunction with an automobile. You just need to design it better to get the amount of fuel you use to the amount you make.

While Hydrogen is the most common element in our Universe, there is little or no free hydrogen on Earth. You would need to make what you use. Here, the most common form of hydrogen is in water, good old H2O. The cost of operating a hydrogen powered car would be the cost of the energy necessary to break down the water molecule so you could then burn the hydrogen to power the car.
