Yankees Win the World Series!!!

Postby doublehelix » Thu Nov 05, 2009 11:41 am

So awesome! I watched the game from a local bar near my home - such fun! So glad the Yanks won, as a Yankees fan. It was wholly satisfying to see the win. I'm super psyched!!!!!!

Would love to see the parade on Friday, too. Wish it was a city holiday!

As a Yankee fans since loooooonnnnnnggggg before you were born, it's good to see the team back on top. Mo is God :)
And Godzilla is MVP! Wow!
And the Yankees are Pedro's Daddy :) :)

I remember the CBS years, which is somewhat of a measure aming some of the "old" guys. :)

There are going to be some fascinating things to watch vis'a'vis who gets kept around among
Pettite, Wang, Matsui...

And I am big Phil Hughes fan, but it seemed the wheels might be coming off in the playoffs.
I hope they are patient with him in the rotation next year.

A friend of mine wrote on his FB page last night that he "hopes the question of Pedro Martinez' parentage is definitively answered tonight." LOL!!!!

In a funny note, Yankee fans on some boards I read from time to time were rooting for them
to dump Marte a month or two ago. He was dominant in the series.

I will always remember Matsui for the time several season ago where he broke a bone trying
to make a diving catch, and when he got out of the hospital, he apologized to the fans for
getting hurt.

Matsui has been one of my favorite Yankees since he came there. I'd be real disappointed to see him go. congrats on him being the first Japanese player to ever win the world series MVP!!

The way he carried himself on the field was very impressive to me.

I suspect he will be back.

How many World Series have we had? 100? 120? In all of those, how many times have the NY Yankees won the series? Just curious.

I got to wear my Yankee's cap to work today. :)

Sadly, I didn't get to watch any of the Series.

The Yankees have 27 titles. They have won 39 American league penants.

Something else I was just thinking about today. Almost every single Yankee has been booed by fans when they are in a bad slump. Even Jeter has been booed before. But I don't recall even one single time that Matsui has ever been booed. I think that both demonstrates the respect that fans have for him and just how consistent he really has been throughout his Yankee career.

Interesting insight.

Closest I can come to that is probably Ron Guidry, I don't recall him being booed.
He also carried himself with great dignity, and did minimum bitching.

Someone once said (maybe Jeter?) that to be considered a decent hitter means you will succeed only a third of the time. Amazing! I try to remember that when my perfectionism starts to run rampant.

I'm watching the parade here (though it goes in and out, the video):

One thing I find fascinating about Jeter is that, through the age where you had some SS hitting a lot
(30+) home runs a year, he didn't try to change and be one of them, he stayed with a style of
hitting that was consistent with his game. He's a line drive hitter who goes the other way quite a bit.

Hitting has evolved, IMHO a lot in my lifetime. I don't know if some of my favorite pitchers from the
70's could succeed in this day and age. A pitcher like Catfish Hunter, who worked the black with
good, but not overpowering stuff would, I think, have a difficult time in this day and age, with hitters
covering the strikezone better, and being so much stronger...

If I counted correctly, there have been 104 World Series played. the Yankees are 27-13 in thir 40 appreances so have won 26 percent of the total series.

Well, "booing" is part of the tradition of baseball and fans expressing themselves. But I can tell you, from a Southern perspective, Yankee fans are rude, especially when the Yanks come to Atlanta. But compared to Buffalo and Detroit (football) fans, they are southern fried genteel!

They boo their own players because they're used to winning all the time. And they boo opposing teams' good players because they can't stand the fact that New York isn't the center of the Universe.

Just kidding. Actually, despite the stereotypes about New Yorkers, when I was in show biz I found that majority New Yorker audiences were quite polite, AND sophisticated. (IOWs, they got the joke in one beat. But the same is true for most big cities and the awareness or "hip" level of the people.)

Plus -- the Yanks started out life as the Baltimore Orioles.
So really for my money, you've got to count also their time as the "Original Baltimore Orioles" -- with Willie Keeler, John Mc Graw and all those great old-timers.
