My Facebook Page

Postby jim48 » Wed Nov 04, 2009 2:05 pm

So I finally did Facebook. Gonna' have a friend take some new pictures of me to post there, since I given up trying to post my pictures here. Flickr and Photobucket open my Documents, not my Pictures. Anyway come see me at Facebook! James Lynch! I'm amazed how many of my buds from high school are there and how many I've heard from already. Kewel! Wait'll they learn that I am the only real, genuine, bonafide, honest-to-God scientist here at SDC!!!

No. What am I doing wrong? Just James Lynch, no middle initial.

I can't seem to find you on there Jim. I like 'facebook' myself and recently just discovered it. I found a lot of old friends and some found me 1st.

You're right. I don't. I've been chatting with some high school buds there and they've all said "There must be a million James Lynchs out here!" But only one me. Nice to know they've been looking for me. Hard to believe that we're all 50 now as well. I still want to bring my SDC buds over there, my real, genuine, bonafide, honest-to-God posse!

I'm on Facebook as well Jim and so are many of my friends and family. However, quite a few of us haven't used it in a long time and I'd advise you to leave it alone - or at least, be very careful about how you use it. It's nothing more than a personal data-mining exercise by the Facebook PTB, in my opinion. See this thread, for example ...

Thanks for the heads-up. The novelty should wear off in a day or two.

I can see why you wouldn't want to be on it. I've been on it since you use to have to have a college e-mail address just to gain access to it, but now i never bother to use it. At first i thought it was cool, all the pictures from hanging out with friends and stuff. Writing funny things on people's wall. Then all these invitations to these stupid facebook programs started coming out, they started changing the layout, and all this other junk. So i got tired of Facebook and stopped using it...and that's when i found out Facebook isn't just some website, it's expected to be an obligation. People bitch at you when you don't read their messages on there(hello, i have a phone and my number is one there). I literally got an e-mail from Facebook wondering why i hadn't been on in a couple of months. What the hell? I'm suppose to answer to this thing?

Then the straw that broke the camel's back happened about a month ago. One of my old Professors from Community college who was one of my favorite professors sent me an invite to facebook on my yahoo account(not my school account). So i thought it'd be cool to go and friend him on facebook and catch up and see what he's doing. So i go on after not going on in months just to simply send a friend request. When i get on this icon comes up about Facebook chat, which i didn't even know they had. I click on it and this lady friend who has been annoying me for a while and smothering me(which is a whole other story) starts chit chatting, whining and bitching about her problems(which aren't that big of a deal). Then she goes on and on and i just keep trying to end the conversation nicely and she's like the Energizer bunny. All i wanted to do was simply make a friend request and instead i get stuck with some 15 minute vent session about someones damn problems.

So i've pretty much decided Facebook is an obligation that i don't need, nor do i want. Jim, i might make an exception though and risk running into this person again to add you, but don't hold your breath.

Facebook is my way of staying connected with my friends. Calling on my cell phone is expensive and regular email is just plain boring. Nor do I have a car to drive to go see my friends. Also, I get quite lonely in the dorms (really an apartment). I hate being lonely. Another thing, facebook gives me something to do - play games, chat, take fun quizes, etc.... It is my escape from reality and the daily stress and anxiety of college. On the other hand, yes, one must be very careful and watch what they are doing on facebook. Also, people's social skills are sliding down the slope. I like facebook, but I always prefer face to face interactions with people.

Facebook is one step above Twitter. I can't seem to "get" Twitter. What's so great about it. It's a bunch of disjointed voices in a fugue. I feel like I'm in hell when I'm on it. I quit Twitter.

Twitter will be the final death knell of the written word. "Books" will be written in 140 characters and doe-eyed, slack-jawed, drooling, intellectual neanderthals and fanbois will praise their chosen Twit poets on their eloquent use of "r" and their amazing versatility in choosing between "k" and "kk."

"Sign up for my twitter feed!"

hi r u tehr? k? ?? lolz i cum 2cu l8tr kk?

><

/slap

..

/slapslap

The DUMBEST, MOST ASININE thing I can think of is Twitter being part of some degenerate, viewer-starved cable-news network's broadcast. What intellectual midget thought up that idea? If I wanted to read moron's opinions of critical late-breaking news issues I'd friggin watch Senators give their damn presentations to empty seats on C-Span.

<pant pant>

OK.. /sigh Rant over. :)

Lost Packet, you remind me of Harlan Ellison, science fiction literature's self-proclaimed "last angry man". Your writing is damn good and you are vocal, but unlike Ellison you are not a self-proclaimed anything. Why aren't you doing more? I've got a book and an agent and I'm a decent writer at best. I'm a better entertainer than I am a writer, to be fully honest. My book will sell but never be nominated for any writing awards. If you and I were given the same writing assigment, mine would be clever and witty and fun while yours would have some of the same but be far more thoughtful! What are you waiting for?
