This is a quiz for people who know everything

Without using Google can you answer these?

Wow this is not so easy!!
This is a quiz for people who know everything!

I found out in a hurry that I didn't.

These are not trick questions. They are straight questions with straight answers

1. Name the one sport in which neither the spectators nor the participants know the score or the leader until the contest ends.

2. What famous North American landmark is constantly moving backward?

3. Of all vegetables, only two can live to produce on their own for several growing seasons. All other vegetables must be replanted every year. What are the only two perennial vegetables?

4. What fruit has its seeds on the outside?

5.. In many liquor stores, you can buy pear brandy, with a real pear inside the bottle. The pear is whole and ripe, and the bottle is genuine; it hasn't been cut in any way. How did the pear get inside the bottle?

6. Only three words in standard English begin with the letters 'dw' and they are all common words.. Name two of them.

7. There are 14 punctuation marks in English grammar. Can you name at least half of them?

8. Name the only vegetable or fruit that is never sold frozen, canned, processed, cooked, or in any other form except fresh.

9. Name 6 or more things that you can wear on your feet beginning with the letter 'S.'

I will post answers later on but I'd like to see who knows all of the answers without using Google or any other device that tells you the answers.

This made the rounds here several months ago, and mostly we all answered it well. But go for it; it's always a hoot to see people exercise their noggins this way. Heck, if the thread on Internet being good for your mind is true, then this is a mild morning workout. :)

I did not realize that it was already posted here. I guess I missed it when it was posted back then.

Highlight area under the question to see my poor attempts.

1. Name the one sport in which neither the spectators nor the participants know the score or the leader until the contest ends.
chess

2. What famous North American landmark is constantly moving backward?
I live in Europe, is it famous enough?

3. Of all vegetables, only two can live to produce on their own for several growing seasons. All other vegetables must be replanted every year. What are the only two perennial vegetables?
Have no idea

4. What fruit has its seeds on the outside?
Strawberries

5.. In many liquor stores, you can buy pear brandy, with a real pear inside the bottle. The pear is whole and ripe, and the bottle is genuine; it hasn't been cut in any way. How did the pear get inside the bottle?
They are grown in the bottles. After the bees do their business you put a small pear in the bottle (without cutting it of the branch) and tie the bottle on the tree.

6. Only three words in standard English begin with the letters 'dw' and they are all common words.. Name two of them.
dweeb, dwelling (dwell), Dwight

7. There are 14 punctuation marks in English grammar. Can you name at least half of them?
colon, semicolon, coma, full stop (period), hyphen, asterisk, slash, backslash, exclamation mark, question mark...

8. Name the only vegetable or fruit that is never sold frozen, canned, processed, cooked, or in any other form except fresh.
watermelon (at least I've never heard of it being processed)

9. Name 6 or more things that you can wear on your feet beginning with the letter 'S.'
shoes, socks, sandals, slippers, stockings, skates

As above, you can highlight the blank areas to see my attempts. ;-)

1. Name the one sport in which neither the spectators nor the participants know the score or the leader until the contest ends.
I don't know, but I'm guessing it's some kind of a time-trial race.

2. What famous North American landmark is constantly moving backward?

Niagara Falls, which is eroding itself backwards constantly. Of course, this is true of all waterfalls, but this one is particularly famous.

3. Of all vegetables, only two can live to produce on their own for several growing seasons. All other vegetables must be replanted every year. What are the only two perennial vegetables?

Egyptian onions are perennial (and also easy to propagate). So is garlic (which is related) but I'm not sure if garlic is properly considered a vegetable or an herb. Most herbs are perennial. I've got a potted rosemary and a potted bay in my front window. In fact, most onions/leeks/etc are technically perennials, but don't generally get the chance because they get dug up and eaten after less than one season. Heck, potatoes are perennials too, which should be obvious when you consider that they are propagated not by seed but by cuttings (of the tubers). Carrots are biannuals, but like potatoes and most onions, get harvested during their first season. (They're no good after that.) Oh, and asparagus. That's a perennial. And if we go on to non-US cuisine, the list gets longer. A popular vegetable in Asian cuisine is the daylily. (The buds, blooms, seedpods, and roots are all tasty, especially stir-fried.) It's a very hardy perennial.

I rather think the list is longer than two, unless one has a very restrictive definition of "vegetable".

The bottle was placed over the flower shortly after pollination and tied to the tree branch, allowing the pear to grow inside it.

6. Only three words in standard English begin with the letters 'dw' and they are all common words.. Name two of them.

dwarf, dwelling, dweeb

7. There are 14 punctuation marks in English grammar. Can you name at least half of them?

comma, period, semi-colon, colon, hyphen, dash, quote, double-quote, left parethesis, right parenthesis, question mark, exclamation point... Do the periods of ellipsis count? There are more, but I've gotta have 14 by now. ;-)

8. Name the only vegetable or fruit that is never sold frozen, canned, processed, cooked, or in any other form except fresh.

Iceberg lettuce, maybe? Though that's available chopped, which is technically processing.

9. Name 6 or more things that you can wear on your feet beginning with the letter 'S.'

shoe, sock, sandal, stilt, slipper, stocking (silk or otherwise), ski

Highlight below for my guesses.

1. Name the one sport in which neither the spectators nor the participants know the score or the leader until the contest ends.
boxing

2. What famous North American landmark is constantly moving backward?
statue of liberty?

3. Of all vegetables, only two can live to produce on their own for several growing seasons. All other vegetables must be replanted every year. What are the only two perennial vegetables?
two of my favorite vegetables are asparagus and artichokes, my brother has grown both in his garden and I seem to remember them coming back on their own

4. What fruit has its seeds on the outside?
the strawberry

5.. In many liquor stores, you can buy pear brandy, with a real pear inside the bottle. The pear is whole and ripe, and the bottle is genuine; it hasn't been cut in any way. How did the pear get inside the bottle?
they grow the pears in the bottles

6. Only three words in standard English begin with the letters 'dw' and they are all common words.. Name two of them.
dwell, dwarf?

7. There are 14 punctuation marks in English grammar. Can you name at least half of them?
looking at the keyboard it's hard not to get this one... colon, semi-colon, question mark, exclamation point, comma, period, apostrophe, quotation marks...that's at least 7

8. Name the only vegetable or fruit that is never sold frozen, canned, processed, cooked, or in any other form except fresh.
not sure...maybe lettuce?

9. Name 6 or more things that you can wear on your feet beginning with the letter 'S.'

1. I was going to say chess, but is that really a sport? It's a board game.

2. Niagara Falls. (That was easy.)

3. Um... tomatoes and asparagus, maybe? Nah, not tomatoes.

4. Pineapple.

5. Damned if I know.

6. Dweeb and Dwarf. (That was easy too.)

7. Comma, period, colon, semi colon, question, exclamation. (Yeah. Easy.)

8. Lettuce.

9. Shoes, slippers, socks, sandals, skis, stockings.

#5 would be that the bottle was created around the pear, not the pear being somehow forced into the bottle. Or, contrariwise, the pear was literally grown inside of the bottle.

Ruh-roh! Dwindle makes FOUR English words that begin with dw, (excluding names). Dwell, dwarf, dweeb, and dwindle!! Quiz is inherently flawed!

1. The one sport in which neither the spectators nor the participants know the score or the leader until the contest ends...

Asparagus and rhubarb.

Question 3 would depend on where you live!
I have kept tomatoes, especially cherry and sweet bite varieties going for several seasons.
Same goes for most of the solanum family, capsicums or peppers, eggplant, chilli's.
If frost or wind doesn't get 'em they can last for years.
