Homeopathy and the irrelevance of matter

Postby CalliArcale » Thu Oct 29, 2009 2:55 pm

I thought I'd posted this, but apparently not. It's hilariously bad. A homeopath and behavioral optometrist from Austin, TX apparently gave a talk in Bozeman, MT about homeopathy that is just . . . wow. I suspect Stephen Hawking would be quite miffed if he heard it, since the woman attributes string theory to him. But the worst is what she does to Einstein's famous equation, E = mc^2.

You know that when light is energy, right? OK. And he [Einstein] gave us the theory that energy equals mass times the speed of light. E=mc2. OK. If we take that formula, and we think that there's a lot of mass, right? OK. If you collapse all the mass down into the universe, so that there is no space between the mass, do you know how much mass there is in the entire universe? You think you're a lot of mass, right?... Well, the whole universal mass can be consolidated down into the size of a bowling ball. That's all there is in the whole universe. So, how much mass are you? That's right, an infinitessimal amount. So if you take that formula, E=mc2, you can almost cross out mass. So the formula ends up being "energy = the speeed of light."

Calli- On the vid I got about as far as the excerpt that you transcribed. Does she ever mention how much the 'universal mass' bowling ball would weigh?

Is this yet another "doctor" confusing mass with size?

No. She just thinks it's a very "minimal amount" of mass...

/facepalm

I wonder what the good "doctor" would say if you told her that Saturn would float in water? (Fact.)

She'd probably crap herself with glee and then, with a herculean effort of mighty woo, declare that water "weighs more" than Saturn.

She is describing the big bang backwards. :P All the mass was at one point, superdense. No space between the electrons,
protons, neutrons and stuff. Well, those might not have existed yet. But for sure she is wrong for disrupting

The Equation. Unless in a black hole relativity changes. :?:

For some wild and crazy reason, I don't think the reasons for her explanation were as erudite as all that...

I don't have a problem with people who have wacky notions founded on ignorance. But, I do have a problem with people who have such notions talking to other ignorant people and seeking to convince them that they are factual.

Meh.. one day, she'll get cancer or something and then go through a flurry of homeopathic gobbity-gook trying to cure herself. Her last words will be "Ooops." I feel sad for her.. it must be tough going through life with so many fantastic and completely unexplainable phenomenon like lightbulbs, telephones, that little box in the living room that light and sound comes out of.. and such.

One commenter had an excellent response, which was something to the effect of "if mass is irrelevant, then she won't mind my massless hand slapping her, right?"

Ah yes. (SuSth)v= Ma x c2 + d= (rg) = Swift stroke of the mass and density of the hand at the speed of light squared equals slapped upside-the-head real good. :)
