Area 51 worth the trip?
Area 51 worth the trip?
So I'm heading down to Vegas in July with a cousin of mine...we'll be there for about 5 days. I'm wondering if it's worth the trip out towards Area51 to do a little poking around? I know that obviously I won't see the facility or anything like that. I'm wondering more about seeing things in the sky out there...if anyone has been there, how often do the sightings of weird objects occur? Do they still occur even? Is there anything out that way besides a base? An area51 memorabilia store perhaps?
Just thinking that since I'm out that way, why not right?

You won't see anything, at least during the day, and beware the cammo dudes, authorized to use deadly force if you get too close. I'm told being there at night is interesting.

I would be absolutely terrified to hang around Area 51 at night. I've never been near it, don't know how close one can get without an escort/authorization. LOL about the memorabilia store. When you go to Roswell there are green men EVERYWHERE. The local Walmart has a gigantic bright green alien covering most of the front walls and everywhere you go they sell alien keychains, pens, hats, magnets, etc etc. It's hilarious. But I don't think you'll encounter the same thing at Area 51. Is there even a town nearby?

Whoa. Surreal. Creepy. Thanks, docm -- now I know. Well, I bet those places would all have magnets and bumper stickers for sale.
Good luck greddytalon!

Thanks guys...I'll try my best to get a few pics with some of the "Military Installation" signs.
Hopefully I don't get shot!
We were thinking of going out during the day to see the store, the signs, but that's boring don't ya think? It'll be much more of an adventure to go out at night when we may actually get to see reversed engineered experimental aircraft!

I think you'll make better use of your time by paying a visit to Death Valley. The place is a geologic wonder, and being there in mid-summer has to be experienced to be believed!

I think we should all go. Seriously. Start a separate thread, invite anyone interested, network with them, pick a date down the road and off we go! Maybe next June 24th on the 63rd anniversary of Kenneth Arnold's sighting that started all the UFO stuff. That'll give us plenty of time to prepare. Of course we must get our friend Smersh over from London. And Vogon to cook for us.

Sounds like a great idea!

We should! Perhaps the most brilliant idea I have heard in quite a while! We should start planning! One thing...how are we going to get everyone together, we would have to meet somewhere near area 51. Us New Yorkers along with some space.com-ers from other states would probably have to fly....but then what about a vehicle for after the flight is done? I am starting to really think about this! It would also be a great way for all us space.com amigos to meet each other!

So...do we need to start a new thread on this possible trip or can we keep this one?

May as well keep this one. I'm told that groups going out there at night are not uncommon, but it helps to have a local guide or two, because it's easy to stray into restricted areas and get shot. I can't wait!!!

ok, will do! Night is the best time...more adventurous, more mysterious, more daring, and not as hot outside! If we all really pull this off, this is going to be so much fun!

Sounds like an aventure to me. Even if we dont see a UFO, we can still go to a close by casino, drink free drinks till we do start seeing UFOs. Only one thing we dont know what everybody really looks like when we meet, unless jim48 really looks like his avater. I can see the headlines in the paper now, Fester Adams seen escaping from area 51.
I can read writting, but I can't write reading. Popeye

Good point about not knowing what everybody really looks like. Guess we would have to have a really exact meeting place. About the drinks...darn it, I'm only 19...but I am a college student so... This would be so much fun!

And if you look like your avatar it'll be a cartoon freely mingling with people like Roger Rabbit and they'll put you on The View

Sounds a great idea but I'll have to see if I can make it over next year. Where will we stay? Vegas?
I've been to Vegas once before about 10 years ago and Grand Canyon. If I went out there again I'd like to have another look at the canyon and also a longer look at Hoover Dam (was only there for about half an hour last time and didn't look around the museum there.)
Regarding Area 51, as I understand it it's impossible to get any closer than about half a mile without getting shot with several hundred rounds, then chopped up into tiny little pieces and eaten for breakfast by the camo dudes.
There was a video on Youtube somewhere a while back, in which a couple of guys drove as far as they could along the road leading to the base until they came to a warning sign telling them that deadly force is authorised if they go any further. (Or words to that effect.) They stopped just before the sign, got out of their car, put some music on and started dancing around in the road wearing tin-foil hats, while the camo-dudes watched from their parked SUV near the top of a hill.
Sadly, I couldn't find the video again when I searched or I would have posted it here.
Pobody's nerfect.
