In most cases one missing tile on the belly would not be a problem for the re-entry since the laminar flow over the cavity
would prevent most damage. More than one missing tile in the same place would be a problem and could cause a burn through of the vehicle skin. How serious that would be depends on what was damaged inside the Orbiter. close(-)

Now let's not jump the gun too much, VASIMR is taking a steady road to commercial use. It is a long way to getting men to Mars. There are a lot more problems to solve than just propulsion.

Didn't those mission make use of gravity-assist flybys of Jupiter? If so then the rockets used (most likely some type of Centaur) probably aren't leaving the Solar System.

July is the middle of the summer thunder storm season and is also in the hurricane season, however I understand that you have no choice on the time of the year to come.

I suggest Titusville for the best view of a Shuttle launch. Cocoa beach is just 45 min or so away and there is a good beach available at PlayaLinda beach. (There are no life guards there. Also the north end is clothing optional.)
