I feel for your daughter since my public school attempted a similar trick with me. Luckily, my school system was well above-average for a public school, and wide-spread medicating of kids was still a rather new concept at the time (so refusal to medical was not considered heretical), so my parents were successful at keeping me off meds. I agree with you that public schools are not good at handling "atypical cases". This, I think, is a great place for private schools to step in, since they will have the ability to specialize in a way that public schools can't. Like ALP mentioned, public schools set a MINIMUM standard.

Additionally, on the subject of "special ed", public schools have a very hard time understanding the fact that "learning disabled" and "un-intellegent" are not the same. I had some first hand experience in high school with this. I was still at that time labeled as "learning disabled", but at the same time I was taking both geometry and trigonometry (which was considered an advanced class for my grade-level). The fact that the "basic skills" teacher never caught on, dispite my telling her repeatedly, that I was not in pre-algebra, really hammered home the fact that my individualized attention was not so personalized. So in the case of students with learning disablities, I would from my experience recommend a private school. close(-)

I guess that means that you don’t think that private schools would be competent to provide education that would allow our children to compete in the world marketplace. Public schools are currently doing a lousy job of that now.

No M_A, I think what A_L_P is saying is that limiting education to private institutions only, would have a negative impact on our nation as a whole. Private schools are great, but public schools provide a service that private schools would not, ie: educating people who would be unable or unwilling to pay for education otherwise. close(-)

Actually, I think it is worth noting, that while we all finds plenty of things to disagree over here on SDC, we all fall pretty close tgether in the broad-spectrum of political thought. No hard-core communists, no anarchists, etc, though we all agree that this test is somewhat limitied. I would bet that the majority of Americans fall generally center-ish on this chart. close(-)

Once again, the story must be taken in the context of the society. At that time, a wife and children were considered posessions (charished ones, but still). So, yeah, they are completely replacable. close(-)

Yes, that is a bit if a dick move on the part of God ! However I don't believe the story is meant to be true in the literal sense, rather it is a parable. My reading of the parable is that we should not necessarily link Earthly happenings directly to the will of the divine, we can't see the "big" picture.

With respect to God's little bet, in the context of the society that told the story of Job, God would be expected to behave in the way indicated (it was a very human interaction between him an Satan wasn't it, but what do you expact from a story told by humans?) To take any part of the Bible and not view it within the context of the society that wrote it will lead you to some really wierd conclusions.

As you can tell, I am clearly not a biblical literalist. close(-)
