One of the ironies...The Wehrmacht's weapons were too precisely machined, the legendary German engineering worked against the common footsolder. In the harsh winter cold the differential metal contraction caused their rifle bolts to become inoperable while the Soviet rifles, less precisely engineered (Okay, engineered to sufficient tolerances to get the job done and no further. What more does a grunt really need?) continued to operate. Yes, that's common knowledge, but it's something which I have always found rather amusing. close(-)

I would love a Military History subforum here in Free Space. I checked out the Military History area at History Channel's boards and, apologies in advance for the terminology, but the best way to describe is, in polite terms, a swinging meat contest. Our boys suffered more than your boys, our planes were better, your troops did more atrocities...and that's just the conversations between the Americans and the various subjects of the Crown. close(-)
