You cannot rule out the possibility is was a Russian capsule because it may have been a source of embarassment for Russia, it would have been a much worse embarassment for the US military and administration.

A lot of things were happening in 1965, a lot of space technology was being tried out. Not only reconnaissance, but don't forget the FOBS system. At the time, the administration would not want the general population aware that Russia could have nukes orbiting in space.

There were scores of secret programs, I'm sure many still are classified top secret. Even today, it's almost impossible to learn what was really going on. close(-)

For the record, the Army Criminal Investigative Devision report on this incident likewise stated that no useful information was obtained from Hamoodi in connection with his interrogation by LTC West and his soldiers. My apologies if I came down a bit too aggressively. Seriously, I never meant to disrespect you. But in my personal life I come into regular contact with friends who do research work, and it's a personal thorn in my side when someone attempts to degrade the hard work and effort they put in.

Re-incarnation is an interesting subject, because it implies that the "soul" is eternal, and that there is some form of mystical power that would make it happen. Many religions propose the concept that on death, a person's "soul" is transported elsewhere, and continues on. In Christianity, it's Heaven.

Naturally, the question whether memories continue on is very relevant. I am sceptical on that issue, because apart from anectdotes, no hard proof exists. But since no proof exists that re-incarnation is impossible, it cannot be discounted.

Personally, I have a hard time believing it, mainly because the people I have personally spoken to, the ones who sincerely believe in re-incarnation, talk about being the re-incarnation of some famous or glamorous figure. Marie Antoinette, Joan of Arc, Catherine the great, that kind of stuff. But I have never heard anyone indicate they are the re-incarnation of some unknown. My interpretation is that these people just want others to believe they are "special", mysterious, and glamorous. For them it's about ego and inflated pride. close(-)

Bingo.

I'm old enough to remember back in the 60's when this series made it's debut. Compared to the regular fare that networks offered, Star trek not only pushed down barriers, but smashed through them. You have to remember that back in those days, people's (and the censor's) attitudes were very different. TV played it pretty safe back then, and controversial topics such as divorce, single pregnacy, racism were ignored.

But with Star Trek, a heck of a lot of social issues were raised. Trust me, this show broke a lot of barriers. Mention has been made about the subserviant roles some of non-white origins played. True, it can be interpreted that way. But it is equally important to remember that back in those days, no other show did it at all. If a captain had a crew, they were all white. One major TV show, Bonanza, was running the same time as Star Trek, and holy cow, just look at their character line-up. All white males, and their cook, a little Chinese...

Personally, I have great respect for Roddenberry for raising a lot of social issues that were previously avoided on TV.

Issues depicted in the various series include war and peace, the value of personal loyalty, authoritarianism, imperialism, class warfare, economics, racism, religion, human rights, sexism and feminism, and the role of technology.

Smart people are very capable of reaping huge benefits from opportunity. The scientists who are going overboard supporting the global warming theory did not invent global warming, it is an event supported by hard data. They just chose to inflate things. The same goes to Cheney. He did not have to plant the concept of invading iraq, Bush was firmly set on exacting revenge for his daddy, and it turned into basically a trillion dollar whack job. The most expensive assasination in history.

So here we sit, watching the various factions trying to convince everyone either global warming is a threat, or not. Sadly, when you deal with fanatics, be it left or right, a lot of nastiness occurs, and the truth is no longer as important than just convincing people. Somewhere between these exremes lies the truth, how much global warming is happening, it's projected rise, and estimates of damage.

Personally I am firmly convinced that the activities of humans are affecting the climate and ecology of this planet. Back in the 60's I spent some summers at the familt cottage, fondly remember catching small fish from a rowboat with my brothers. A real Norman Rockwell moment. But today, that same lake is dead, no fish, no vegetation. Acid rain killed Lake St Peter, fact.

It's funny, how in this forum which is supposed to entertain science, so much about global warming is misunderstood. And the consequences. If it's true, it truly will be a horror story.

It's not so much about having to pay higher utility bills because the air conditioner is running more, it's the effect on the ecology and results. For instance, water is capable of having oxygen in it, but the ratio is determined by temperature. Basically, raise the temperature, less oxygen, and thus less fish. Less fish, a lot of people will starve to death. Or that a rise in temperature will alter weather patterns. Drought, dust bowls, a much colder Europe and west coast of North America because of changed ocean currents, just for example.

So a word of caution, because we have only one shot at this. If we get it wrong, it is possible it could be the extinction of humans. Maybe, maybe not, but are we really so willing to take such a HUGE risk because of personal politics? close(-)
