Lets not forget why we need manned space missions and why we need to establish colonies on other worlds. It is to preserve our specis. It is not wise to put all you eggs in one basket. One large asteroid or comet and it's game over for the Earth. Unless you can incorporate human DNA in robots the only possible solution is manned (and womened!) exploration/colonization. close(-)

Great Tid bit for the Apollo fans! It is true that this station did recieve the signals at the time they first walked on the moon. They also recorded the signal which was far better quality then what we all saw. They had to downsample and broadcast out the feed which made it lose a great amount of detail.

Today we would just use one of our many relay satellites just as what is used by the Shuttle and the ISS. Before that they had to hand off from one station to the next as the earth rotated... a very labor intensive process. close(-)

The original design of the Space shuttle had larger external tanks that were going to be used as building blocks for a large wheel-like Station. Great idea making use of every part that you used all that energy to get to orbit. For some stupid reason (they quote monetary and political) they killed the plan and went with a smaller tank. Could you imagine the size of a station we would have today if we had over 125 external fuel tank sized building blocks in orbit? And now with the shuttle program winding down I'd say we missed a golden opportunity. close(-)
