WASHINGTON -- Sirius Satellite Radio, New York, has completed testing of the third and final satellite in its three-spacecraft constellation, and is ready to offer limited service beginning January, the company said in a Dec. 22 statement.
While Sirius is scheduled to begin broadcasting its audio entertainment service in January, a marketing push for new service will not begin until the spring, company spokeswoman Mindy Kramer told Spacenews.com in a November interview.
Sirius [SIRI] is one of two satellite radio services vying for U.S. consumers beginning in 2001. The first of Washington-based XM Satellite Radio’s two satellites is scheduled for launch in January from the Long Beach, California-based Sea Launch floating platform, which operates from an equatorial location in the Pacific Ocean.

Both services plan to offer consumers 100 channels of digital radio for about $10 per month and are targeting the automobile market. XM will operate two satellites in geostationary orbit and a series of ground-repeaters to boost signals, while Sirius’ three spacecraft will fly in an elliptical orbit so at least two of the satellites are over the United States at all times.
