A Four-Star Hotel That's Out of this World (cont.)

Let the games begin

Low gravity, one-sixth that of Earth, is a master builder's paradise.

Structures impossible to build here on our gravity-grip of a world become feasible on the Moon. Furthermore, minerals and ores found on neighboring Luna are ideal to fabricate much of the hotel. Hauling all the requisite construction materials from Earth would be far too expensive.

Each tower is comprised of a thick hull of Moon rock and a layer of water held between glass panes. The water absorbs energetic particles hitting the hotel. At the same time, the water helps to keep temperatures constant. The lunar rock adds yet another layer or protection.

Rombaut said that the Moon hotel design allows tourists to indulge in low-gravity games. Indoors mountaineering can be offered. Outfitted with special suits replete with bat-like wings, guests can also take flight in an indoor enclosure.

Welcome mat on the Moon

Putting out a hotel welcome mat on the Moon is keen with the Lunar Explorers Society (LUNEX), and the hotel makes a nice fit into future plans, said LUNEX co-founder Koppeschaar.

"The Moon has been and will be very special to all of us. Its tidal effects helped life crawl out of the oceans," Koppeschaar told SPACE.com. "If we all push hard enough we may indeed live and see the organization of the Olympic Games on the Moon in 2028. Tourists interested in science and technology would want to visit the lunar oxygen plants and other industrial sites on the Moon," he said.

Architect Rombaut agreed that building a lunar hotel has profound meaning.

"Ever since the beginning of humankind, we have looked to the sky with its stars and planets," he said. "We have designed many new utopias to make a new start in our imperfect world. The story of the human race through exploration and expansion into new territories and environments -- and the eventual establishment of cities -- is the essence of civilization."
