The ride will "provide guests with a deep space adventure that simulates challenges faced by real astronauts, as well as the experience of lifting off, leaving Earth's atmosphere and soaring millions of miles through the solar system on a space ship," Disney said.
Mission: SPACE will be the first ride that lifts passenger cars -- reportedly designed to resemble futuristic space shuttles -- straight up at high speeds, providing a sensation of weightlessness.
According to Disney aficionados familiar with the project, the attraction will also feature live interactive chat with astronauts on orbital missions, lunar and martian rover simulations, and exhibits highlighting the history of space exploration.
While Musgrave and other former NASA personnel have advised Disney on the attraction, the space agency's active role will be limited to providing equipment and information, as well as facilitating the astronaut chats.
Computer manufacturer Compaq will provide Mission: SPACE with technological expertise as part of its newly-minted alliance with Disney.
"The combination of Disney magic and Compaq technology will create a truly one-of-a-kind guest experience," said Disney World President Al Weiss. "Epcot is the perfect setting, continuing the park's dedication to the explorer in all of us with its unique attractions that inspire us to discover new worlds."
The ride is set to open in 2003. Meanwhile, curious passersby will see only a wall around the construction site, emblazoned with a starburst and the teasing message, "Watch this SPACE for a future announcement".
