The struggling satellite phone company Iridium announced some positive news on Tuesday, saying that its North American sales have increased steadily since July.
Meanwhile, Iridium's Chief Financial Officer, Leo Mondale, resigned on Tuesday, the second person in five months to leave that position. Mondale, reached on his cellular phone, declined to comment.
Iridium's product -- telephones that work virtually anywhere in the world -- were a bust when they were first introduced. Their prices were apparently too high and the phones too bulky.
But in North America, at least, an across-the-board price cut seems to have sped up sales. Iridium North America, a local provider, reported a 25 percent increase in subscribers in July and August, and a 20 percent jump in airtime usage among users.
