A European digital satellite-radio system similar to those about to enter service in the United States is the objective of a strategic partnership between Alcatel Space and WorldSpace.

The alliance, expected to be announced Jan. 8, calls for the two companies to seek partners in a consortium to provide up to 100 channels of radio, plus short messaging services, throughout Europe. Alcatel is the prime contractor for the WorldSpace satellite-radio system now operating two spacecraft for Africa and Asia. Alcatel also builds the electronics payload for XM Satellite Radio, scheduled to enter service in the United States this year.
