EMS Acquires Software Maker

WASHINGTON -- Atlanta-based EMS Technologies Inc. is acquiring Digital Space Systems Inc., which makes software for the Cospas-Sarsat satellite-based system for detecting and locating electronic distress signals, according to a Dec. 12 EMS statement.

The companies have been cooperating for several years on satellite-based search-and-rescue efforts, the statement said. EMS Technologies’ Satcom division is a supplier of ground terminals for use with the Cospas-Sarsat system.

Digital Space Systems of Ottawa, Canada, works with U.S. and Canadian national Rescue Coordination Centers to develop management systems for rescue operations. The company’s major government customers include the Canadian Department of National Defense and the U.S. Air Force, the statement said.

Steven Edgett, Digital Space Systems president and chief executive officer, has been named vice president of the combined organization. He will report to Neil Mackay, Satcom vice president and general manager, the statement said.
