A California university is offering what's believed to be the first-ever Master of Business Administration (MBA) program specializing in space commerce.
National University, a San Diego-based institution, offers the space commerce degree through its School of Business and Technology. The program includes coursework in topics such as space law and the financing of space ventures, along with traditional MBA studies.
The goal is "to help space entrepreneurs learn about the aspects of business that they need in order to do business in space," says Thomas Matula, PhD., assistant professor and lead faculty member for space commerce and marketing.
The degree is earned through a 12-month program, run on a one-course-per-month format. Students may take courses in San Diego or online. The first enrollments have just begun, and between 20 and 30 students are expected to begin studies in the fall.
The university estimates that graduating students can expect a starting salary between $55,000 and $65,000 in the space industry.
