A one-day conference in Washington Thursday will focus on how the military can benefit from trends in space commerce such as the growing availability of commercial satellite photography.
The conference, called "Space at the Crossroads: Military Use of Commercial Space Services," is organized by the Space Transportation Association and the Satellite Industry Association. The meeting will be held at the U.S. Senate Hart Office Building on September 16, from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Participants will include military officials and commercial space executives. The goal is "to foster dialogue on both sides," says Eric Stallmer, president of the Space Transportation Association.
Among the subjects covered will be satellite communications, commercial remote sensing, and military use of commercial space launchers. The keynote speakers will be two high-ranking Air Force officials, vice chief of staff Gen. Lester Lyles, and secretary of the Air Force F. Whitten Peters.
